How to Make Tereré (Cold Mate)
Tereré is yerba mate served with cold water or juice instead of hot water. It is popular in Paraguay and nearby regions as a refreshing drink for hot weather.
What you need
A mate or cup, a bombilla with a filter, yerba mate and very cold water. Ice makes it even better.
How to prepare it
Fill about two thirds of the cup with yerba, shake gently to let the fine dust settle, and tilt the cup. Pour a little cold water on the side, place the bombilla and keep refilling with cold water.
Add flavor
Many people add lemon juice, orange juice or fresh mint leaves to the water for a different taste.
Clean it well
Cold, wet yerba spoils quickly. Empty and rinse the cup right after drinking and let it dry.
Quick answers
Is tereré the same as mate?
It uses the same yerba but is prepared with cold water, so it tastes lighter and is more refreshing.
